Item Open Access The PN junction as a variable reactance device for F. M. production(College of Aeronautics, 1957-11) Brown, D. C.A completely transistorized modulator has been developed for the production of frequency modulation of a 10Mc Is carrier. A frequency deviation of 100kc s is obtained by a change in the modulating signal of 0.15V and very good frequency modulation results with very little amplitude modulation.Item Open Access A transistorized radiation monitor(College of Aeronautics, 1956-12) Brown, D. C.; Faraday, B. P.This paper describes the investigation of a number of possible semiconductor devices which can be used for the detection of radioactive particles. The sensitivities of two types of transistor (a p-n-p alloy junction and an n-p-n grown junction) and a p-n alloy junction diode operated up to its "avalanche" condition were determined. The possible uses of such detectors are discussed and they are shown to be • particularly suitable where high rates of counting, with good efficiency and small detecting area (or low geometry) are required. A completely transistorized radiation monitor has been developed using a p-n-p transistor as the detector head. This is specifically designed for a-particle detection but the detector head with slight modification should be suitable for proton or neutron detection.Item Open Access A variable delay line(College of Aeronautics, 1958-01) Brown, D. C.A variable delay line has been designed and built which can be used as an accurate means of measuring time intervals between 10 and 200 p seconds. The use of such a device for the determination of the temperature coefficient of Youngs Modulus is described.
