Item Open Access A choice and inevitability framework in strategic management: empirical evidence of its real-life existence(Springer Verlag, 2020-06-17) Tumidei, Daniele; Alexiou, Constantinos; Bourne, MichaelIn the context of strategic management, strategic choice and determinism are presented as two distinct planning approaches. When treated as two distinct variables, they are responsible for the creation of a framework of analysis, in which it is possible to identify the four different human agency philosophical ontological perspectives, of determinism, hard incompatibilism, libertarianism and compatibilism, each perspective characterized by different amounts of strategic choice and determinism. By drawing on the theoretical context of the aforementioned perspectives, we provide empirical evidence of their real-life existence. The strategic framework not only reduces theoretical fragmentation, but also provides a link between the philosophical debate on free will/determinism and strategic management and can help to reduce uncertainty in planning.Item Open Access Performance management and wellbeing at the workplace(Springer, 2022-03-04) Franco-Santos, Monica; Bourne, Michael; Stull, DanielPerformance management systems can be a source of stress and anxiety, and yet they can also provide clarity and focus, which are both factors that have positive effects on wellbeing at work. Employee wellbeing is essential as it has been shown to enhance organizational performance and employees’ quality of life. These paradoxical results represent a challenge for organizations when designing performance management systems. In this chapter, we examine current research on the relationship between performance management practices and employee wellbeing and formulate a conceptual framework elucidating the conditions under which different wellbeing results are likely to occur. The purpose of our work is to help organizations design performance management mechanisms that account for and foster employees’ wellbeing as well as raise awareness regarding the situations that can deteriorate it. We conclude by highlighting the importance of managerial philosophies and organizational goals definitions, recommending the adoption of a enabling or a hybrid set of performance management mechanisms to better accommodate the complex nature of wellbeing and other organizational goals.Item Open Access Performance measurement and management in a VUCA world(Taylor and Francis, 2021-12-08) Bourne, MichaelIt is widely recognised that performance measurement systems (PMS) are important for the management of a factory, business enterprise or public sector organisation. However, the case can be made that the development of PMS and organisational forms are inextricably linked. As the economic, technical and trading environment evolves, organisations need to adapt, and so do the measurement and management systems. In this editorial, we will retrace the history of PMS from early factory costing systems through to the multi-dimensional approaches widely used today. As the world evolves, organisations and PMS need to evolve too with the papers in this special issue reflecting this. These papers lead us to reconsider the future of PMS as climate change, the internet of things (IoT) and new technology drive us forward towards a complex and uncertain future.
