Kranioti, Elena; Zioupos, PeterThe mechanical and structural properties of bone are known to change significantly with age. Within forensic and archaeological investigations, the medial end of the clavicle is typically used for estimating the age-at-death of an unknown individual. Although, this region of the skeleton is of interest to forensic and clinical domains, alterations beyond the macro-scale have not been fully explored. For this study, non-destructive micro-computed tomography (µ-CT) was employed to characterise structural alterations to the cancellous bone of the medial clavicle. Fresh human cadaveric specimens (12-59 years) obtained at autopsy were utilised for this study, and were scanned with a voxel size of ~83µm. Morphometric properties were quantified and indicated that the bone volume, connectivity, mineral density and number of trabeculae decreased with age, while the spacing between the trabeculae increased with age. In contrast to other sub-regions of the skeleton, trabecular thickness and degree of anisotropy did not correlate with age, which could suggest that the network is becoming increasing perforated with age rather than exhibiting trabecular thinning. These results are used in the context of deriving a potential protocol for forensic investigations by using this particular and largely unexplored region of the skeleton and provide inspiration for future experiments concerning micro-architectural and small scale changes in other regions of the human skeleton.Item Open Access Airworthiness and No Fault Found(Cranfield University, 2022-12-14 09:56) Lacey, LauraExcel spreadsheet with the results from a questionnaire aimed at aircrew on their experience and knowledge of no fault found and its impact on airworthiness.Item Open Access Andrew Claydon PhD(Cranfield University, 2020-11-27 10:15) Gill, Philip; Claydon, Andrew; Gaulter, Sally; Kister, GuillaumeCurrent Polymer Bonded Explosive (PBX) formulation is limited by a compromise - optimised final properties against processability. While explosive content would ideally be maximised and plasticiser content ideally minimised, the formulation would become too viscous to cast and require arduous mixing processes using conventional techniques. However, with Resonant Acoustic Mixing (RAM), formulation does not have to be constrained. Instead of mixing blades, mixing is achieved using an oscillating platform to impart acoustic pressure waves (vibrations) into the mixture. Mixing is orders of magnitude faster than conventionally achievable, and the added ability to mix in the end use casing (mixing ‘in-situ’) also renders casting obsolete in many scenarios. The research aim of the PhD is to assess how machine control and vessel design can be altered to optimise the mixing mechanism and compare material properties of composites mixed ‘in-situ’ and ‘mixed and cast’.Item Open Access Appendices for PhD Thesis Titled "EXPLORING THE IMPACT OF FUNCTIONALISATION ON CO CRYSTALLISATION OF N-HETEROCYCLES"(Cranfield University, 2021-04-12 09:18) O'connor, ColumAppendices for PhD thesis titled "Exploring the impact of functionalisation on co-crystallisation of N-heterocycles"Item Open Access Assessment of HEFA, ATJ, GTL-S8 and Farnesane as alternative jet fuels based on their water shedding characteristics(Cranfield University, 2022-06-24 10:09) Ugbeh, JudithPrevious studies have shown that impurities like surfactants in jet fuel have impacted the performance of coalescer filters. Therefore, aircraft maintenance schedules require an additional operation which is commonly known as water sumping. Normally after bulk fuel transfers, fuels are allowed to settle in tanks and sumping is carried out to remove free water. Water settling tests can indirectly measure surfactants in jet fuels, yet there is no reliable data that focuses on the water settling rate of alternative jet fuels that comply with or are very similar to the Jet A-1 specification. Additionally, the influence of the jet fuel composition on the rate of water-shedding is still unknown. Therefore, there is a need for a reliable study to fill this lack of knowledge. In this work, the water settling rate of five different jet fuels made to different national standards in comparison to conventional Jet A-1 fuel was evaluated. GTL S-8, HEFA and ATJ has been identified as potential/alternative candidates for ASTM D7566 certified jet fuels.Item Open Access B2 Harry Hope - NC Symposium Presentation (Final).pdf(Cranfield University, 2023-06-30 11:45) Gill, PhilipEvaluation of a ‘Stabiliser Cocktail’ for a plasticised Nitrocellulose Polymer Bonded Explosive Harry Hope - AWEItem Open Access B3 NC Symp 2018 - Stability Testing of Nitrocellulose - Ramin et al.pdf(Cranfield University, 2023-06-30 11:37) Gill, PhilipStability Testing of Nitrocellulose Michael Ramin, Beat Vogelsanger, Marc Müller, Beate Pausc Rheinmetal, NitrochemieItem Open Access b4 2018.06.02 “8.12”Tianjin Explosion and Industrial NC.pdf(Cranfield University, 2023-06-30 11:39) Gill, Philip“8.12”Tianjin Explosion and Industrial NC Peng Huan Sichuan Nitrocell Corp.
