Inhibitors and Facilitators of Social Sustainability Practices- A Systematic Literature Review of Manufacturing Company Supply Chains

Abstract

Research Purpose: In a rapidly changing world, social sustainability in supply chains faces increasing complexity and is under heightened scrutiny. This thesis aims to identify the key enablers and barriers that influence the implementation of social sustainability within the supply chain context, thereby enabling manufacturing companies to design proactive strategies and maintain long-term competitiveness. Methodology: A Systematic Literature Review (SLR) of sixty-eight peer-reviewed articles was conducted to examine the leading enablers and barriers to social sustainability in manufacturing supply chains. Findings: The thesis finds eight barriers and six enablers to implementing social sustainability, with External Pressure Mechanisms being the most frequently cited enabler and Resource and Capability Building Constraints as the primary barrier. The analysis also reveals a dominant focus on procurement and manufacturing functions, with limited attention to logistics (including reverse logistics and recycling), product design, and customer service. Research Limitation: The peer-reviewed academic literature, excluding practitioner insights and primary data, with a sole focus on manufacturing contexts, may overlook cross-sectoral considerations and limit its applicability. Contribution: The thesis develops a structured framework that connects enablers, barriers, and supply chain functions within the context of social sustainability. It also highlights underrepresented areas, such as digital fairness, consumer well-being, and community engagement, providing direction for future research and practical improvement in managerial practice​
