Abstract: Optical interferometry is a widely used technique for ultra-precision distance measurements in many areas of science and technology, enabling fundamental physical experiments, such as the hunt for gravitational waves, and underpinning important industrial technologies, such as semiconductor fabrication. My particular research deals with the question on how multiple measurements at different points can be taken simultaneously using only one instrument. This can be achieved by appropriately modulating the optical wavelength of the laser used and a very simple way to perform these measurements is the signal processing technique developed during my PhD thesis project. A key advantage of this approach is that it reduces the number of optical components needed and instead shifts complexity of the measurements into the electronics, potentially enabling very cost-effective measurements. As this technology is very new many potential applications still remain unexplored.Item Open Access Applied Optics: HSW gas cells for mid-IR spectroscopy (2016)(Cranfield University, 2016-08-22 13:32) Francis, Daniel; Hodgkinson, Jane; Tatam, RalphData associated with Applied Optics submission, 'Low volume, fast response-time hollow silica waveguide gas cells for mid-IR spectroscopy'Item Open Access IEEE sensors 2016 data(Cranfield University, 2016-10-21 15:17) Barrington, JamesRaw data for LPGs with periods 167 - 177 um. SEM/EDX and optical microscope images showed that although most of the aerogel was destroyed during extrusion at 65 rpm, extrusion at 5 rpm showed better retention of the aerogel structure. However, when subjected to moulding in a compression press, both composites suffered significant damage. Nevertheless, the final thermal conductivity and damage coefficient values did show an improvement in the thermal insulation properties of the samples extruded at 5 rpm compared to the samples extruded at 65 rpm and the virgin polymer (PA-6) with the former losing around 33% of the structure of the aerogel particles compared to 41% for the later.Item Open Access Passively-coupled, low-coherence interferometric duct profiling with an astigmatism-corrected conical mirror(Cranfield University, 2017-11-16 09:47) Ford, Helen; Tatam, RalphFig 5 Excel file with experimental beam-waist radii (cone mirror alone) and numbers from Zemax model. €œData fig 5€ (one worksheet).
